There are many photograph editing programs available on the market, but most of them are quite expensive. Because of this, we all tend to use what resources we got, like the traditional Windows Paint. After all, it came with the operating system, has a few facilities and it does not cost to use it.

But there is a program which offers you the same quality as Adobe Photoshop at the price of... well, none. This is GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program. GIMP had its first release over a decade ago and has rapidly evolved as an open source alternative to commercial editing tools. Built for aspiring photographers and designers, the rapidly growing toolset has made it a compelling option for intermediate and advanced users alike.

The program is used mainly for editing photographs, composing images or constructing them. GIMP has the same principles as Adobe Photoshop, layering, and many other functions. With GIMP you can create a masterpiece from a simple photograph or you can even create digital art.

GIMP has three components: the toolbox (where you can find all the tools), the main window and the layers, channels, paths, undo and brushes, patterns, gradients. All the windows are unpinned, which I personally consider a great facility. You can easily move them on the desktop to where you need and feel comfortable to work and you can customize the size according to your needs:

You can access all you need from the main window. The menu is user friendly and is done so that Windows users can use it after just a short time. Although it resembles Windows Paint, to a certain extent, I personally think that it is a hybrid between Adobe Photoshop and Paint.

Even so, with no tutorial or previous knowledge of image editing programs you will be able to use its functions in just a couple of minutes. For example, to open the image you want to edit you simply go to the menu, open File -> Open and an interactive menu will appear. You will see an explorer interface through which you can find the folder on your personal computer where the image resides. A particular benefit is that you have a preview of the image, which enables you to easily select the exact desired file.
